Background

Birth and Secrecy

Kailas was born in Westholt, a small Imperial village of hunters and farmers. His mother fled the Empire before his birth after becoming pregnant with Emperor Corvin Thorian’s child outside the sanctioned royal bloodlines.

She eventually settled in Westholt with a man named Garrik, who raised Kailas alongside his own biological son. For most of his life, Kailas did not know the truth of his parentage.

Shortly before Kailas left Westholt to adventure with his younger brother, his mother — Seraphine — finally told him that Corvin Thorian was his biological father and that she had been hunted since before his birth. It was the last time Kailas saw her, and her current fate remains unknown. Her name and survival were later confirmed by Aldric Voss in Session 64, who had believed her dead.

The Academia

During his travels, Kailas’s younger brother became gravely ill. At a tavern, a man identifying himself as Professor Loryn offered to bring the boy to a prestigious academy capable of curing him.

Instead, the academy subjected both brothers to horrific experimentation. Kailas’s younger brother did not survive. Kailas did, emerging transformed by unstable magic tied to intense emotion and fury.

Kailas was eventually broken out of the academy by a group of adventurers and joined their party.

Hatred of the Empire

Kailas lays nearly every major loss in his life at the Empire’s feet: his mother’s persecution, his childhood as a fugitive, his brother’s death, and his own forced transformation.

During the party’s return to Jurin, he finally revealed that Emperor Corvin Thorian was his father and that the current emperor, Lucian Thorian, knows Kailas may have a stronger claim to the throne than he does. Because of that, the Empire is trying to erase him.

Personality

  • Fierce protector with deep emotional wounds
  • Enjoys woodcarving as a calming hobby
  • Quiet but explosive when provoked
  • Harbors deep bitterness toward imperial power and those who exploit others through experimentation
  • Under pressure, can veer between grim honesty and completely shameless confession

Key Moments

  • Threw a Young Black Dragon off the ship during a naval battle
  • Ripped through lizardfolk with brute force
  • Carved doorframes with his woodcarving tools
  • Tortured by Loryn Vethas in Vokarth Academy’s secret lab; freed himself and joined the fight
  • Decapitated Loryn Vethas after Dristuul delivered the killing blow
  • Wore a Ring of Tiamat briefly during vestige awakening - the party had to intervene
  • Forced into hiding at the mansion in Jurin after imperial soldiers arrived in town searching for him
  • Revealed under magical pressure that Lucian Thorian is trying to eliminate him as a rival claimant to the throne
  • Killed Sylva Goldenroar in the desert battle — she turned to black ash and dissipated. Resisted a mysterious portal trying to pull him from this plane during the fight
  • Remarked that his Pyremaul is “gender fluid” after failing to recognize Sylva as female
  • Arm wrestled Wog the orc at the Ambercup in Session 62 — a match fueled by double rage and wild magic surges
  • During the match, his blue tattoos converged and unleashed a ray of power at Wog (a Level 7 spell effect wild magic surge)
  • Won the match and 50 gold; Wog was respectful in defeat
  • Was admired by the bard Viral for his physique
  • Had his curse removed in Session 63Korin cast a curse-removal spell on him after Nyxara freed Korin, ending the lingering effect of Sylva Goldenroar’s magic
  • Performed a wild distraction during breakfast at the Ambercup to steal Jaruul’s food, then choked on a spoonful of cinnamon that Korin offered as payback, coughing it all over the table
  • Met Aldric Voss in Session 64 at house 17 on Cinder Row — by letting slip more than intended, he triggered Aldric to recognise his lineage and name his mother, Seraphine, who “lived after all”
  • Learned that Aldric served his father Corvin Thorian as a loyal friend, who now urges him to reclaim his throne — an idea Kailas met with little desire, though he accepted Aldric’s offer to help uncover the truth of his bloodline
  • Fought in the brawl at The Vulnerable Swordsman (Session 65Session 66) — killed a bandit in two hits, but in blind rage swung at ally Sneid Arkmos (missing), leapt onto the counter to smirk at the downed Jaruul, then struck Korin and shoved him into a wall, until Korin stopped him with Hold Person
  • Was pointed toward Dravenmere by Aldric Voss — a place tied to Empire royalty and once frequented by his father — to uncover his lineage
  • Was challenged to a duel by Aldric Voss, who wished to test his mettle
  • Won the duel against Aldric Voss in Session 67 — the old soldier yielded — and was rewarded with the Signet of the Silent Guard, a steel signet ring Aldric called non-magical but useful
  • Confided in Dristuul that he has never seen his half-brother Lucian Thorian, avoids imperial politics, and intends to one day have a “talk” with him — cracking his knuckles
  • Drove the Sand Witch east toward Dravenmere after a hearty gulp of “driving ale”

Enchanted Mirror Vision

  • Saw his own brother - the one who was killed
