The Five Rings of Tiamat
The Five Rings of Tiamat are artifacts of immense and terrible power, each forged from a fragment of Tiamat’s soul after her defeat during The Calamity.
Origin
When Tiamat was struck down by Bahamut and Pelor, her soul was severed in two. One piece was cast into Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. There, that fragment was used to create five rings, each containing a portion of the Dragon Queen’s essence. The rings were then spread across different continents to prevent their reunion.
Properties
Each ring grants its wearer the ability to transform into a dragon, channelling Tiamat’s own power. However, this comes at an extraordinary cost: the wearer’s soul is gradually consumed by the ring. Prolonged use leads to corruption, madness, and eventual domination by Tiamat’s will.
The War for the Rings
Vespin Chloras’s Campaign
Vespin Chloras, a powerful mage from the post-Calamity era, was manipulated by Tiamat into attempting to gather all five rings and use them to resurrect her. He was ultimately defeated by a coalition of three heroes:
Aftermath
After Vespin Chloras’s defeat, the three victors each took possession of one ring:
| Bearer | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Kallum | Fell to the ring’s corruption and became an antagonist |
| Moelwyn | Suffered grievous injury — lost his left arm — and entered arcane hibernation to survive |
| Ishanah | Retained her ring and remained an ally |
The remaining two rings stayed in the custody of the Cobalt Soul and Vokarth Academy.
Current Relevance
The party encountered the rings’ power firsthand when one was used during Kailas’s vestige awakening ritual. The rings remain central to the overarching conflict: so long as they exist, Tiamat’s resurrection remains possible — and those who wield them risk losing themselves entirely.
