The Calamity

The Calamity was a cataclysmic conflict among the gods that reshaped the world. Among its many battles, the war against Tiamat stands as one of the most consequential — its aftermath still ripples through the present day.

The Fall of Tiamat

During the Calamity, Tiamat was defeated through the combined might of Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon, and Pelor the Dawnfather. Rather than being destroyed outright, Tiamat’s soul was split in two. One fragment was cast into Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells, where it would later be forged into five powerful rings and scattered across continents as a safeguard.

Distribution of the Rings

The five rings were deliberately separated to prevent any single individual or faction from reuniting them:

Falazure’s Secret Role

Unknown to most scholars and historians, Tiamat did not fight alone. Falazure, the draconic god of death and decay, secretly assisted her during the battle against Bahamut. This alliance has been buried beneath layers of myth and religious doctrine.

Most critically, the scales discovered beneath Shalarag — long believed to belong to Bahamut — are in truth the scales of Falazure. This revelation reframes the history of Shalarag’s royal family and the true nature of the seal beneath their church.

Legacy

The Calamity’s consequences continue to shape the world:

  • The Five Rings remain objects of immense power and danger
  • Vespin Chloras later attempted to collect all five rings to resurrect Tiamat
  • Falazure’s hidden involvement means that key historical “truths” — especially in Shalarag — are built on lies
