Avernus
Avernus is the first layer of the Nine Hells. It is a plane of infernal power, central to the origin of The Five Rings of Tiamat and the current whereabouts of Kallum.
Overview
Avernus is described as a vast devil city of iron, brass, and bone architecture. It is a place of infernal power where fiends reside and dark bargains are struck.
The Origin of the Five Rings
After Tiamat’s defeat during The Calamity, her soul was split in two by Bahamut and Pelor. One fragment was cast into Avernus, where it was used to forge five powerful rings, each containing a portion of the Dragon Queen’s essence. The rings were then scattered across continents to prevent their reunion.
Kallum in Avernus
Ishanah scryed on Kallum through a crystal ball and saw him in Avernus:
- Located in a vast devil city of iron, brass, and bone
- Part-dragon in appearance
- Wielding two of the Five Rings
- Hunting Brennan for the “final key”
Kallum’s presence in Avernus places him near the original source of the rings’ power, making his pursuit of Brennan and additional rings all the more dangerous.
Brennan’s Connection
Brennan, a Fiend and the son of Vespin Chloras, periodically returns to Avernus to recover his powers. His fiendish nature ties him to the plane. Brennan spoke about time spent in Avernus and the danger of Kallum seeking another route to Tiamat’s power.
Before being pulled into a breach in Alfield, Brennan warned the party to get to Rexxentrum as soon as possible — suggesting the situation in Avernus was escalating.
