Session 74 - The Missing Children

Morning breaks over The Brass Kettle Inn with a changed Jaruul, a 190-year-old guard, and an innkeeper who knows nothing of rings or Cradles. The party rides the great lifts into the High Ring, splits to pry at customs and sky docks, and turns up a torn page, a missing worker, and a very tall tale for Torvek Dun.

Morning at the Brass Kettle

  • On the morning of the 15th of Unndilar, Korin came downstairs and spoke with the innkeeper Marik Varn at The Brass Kettle Inn.
  • Korin asked about Kegfoot and was surprised to learn he is 190 years old.
  • Sneid Arkmos came down for breakfast and was served mushrooms; he cheeked them and found them edible.
  • The party discussed waking the others and finding more people; Korin went to wake the rest, worried about what had happened the previous day.
  • Korin found Jaruul transformed — he was now a very thin human with black shoulder-length hair and red eyes.
  • Dristuul came out of his room, noticed the transformation, and asked Korin to introduce them. Jaruul ran away and joined Sneid — after some time, he managed to convince Sneid he was still Jaruul.
  • Marik offered to help the party. He did not recognise the ring (the Signet of the Silent Guard), and advised them to travel to the capital to learn more about the royal family, noting that skyship travel usually costs around 100 gold.
  • Korin asked about the missing children; Marik explained that one missing child had come from the upper levels and was from a wealthy family.
  • Sneid asked about The Cradle — Marik knew nothing of it.
  • Marik explained how the lifts of Dravenmere work.

Up the Lifts

  • The party left the inn and travelled towards the lifts. Sneid explained that people in Dravenmere tell the time using cicada rhythms.
  • Korin spoke to a guard near the lift and complimented his beard.
  • Riding the lift up, the party saw the sheer size of the Stone Market.
  • They reached the lower level of the High Ring, where a guard told them they needed to go up another level to find the stairs to Drun Docks.
  • At the upper level of the High Ring, the party was blinded by the sunlight — and saw the never-ending desert stretching away from the side of the mountain.
  • Sneid asked if they could investigate further to learn more about the missing children.
  • Korin questioned a guard and was directed towards the Customs Office; Kailas persuaded a dwarf guard to help search for the tavern Updraft Rest — where he’d been told to come party and look for someone named Roth.

The Party Splits

The Highwind Registry

  • The group found the Highwind Registry Customs Office.
  • Kazrik Stoneguard, the head of security, arrived and moved Sneid Arkmos and Nyxara aside — but Korin remained unnoticed.
  • Seln Varro secretly told the party that a new employee might be connected to the kidnapping.
  • They learned that Edrin Halvek was the missing child and Peltin was the missing worker. Seln also explained that the Alvis Family was influential.
  • Korin tried to investigate but was unsuccessful; Sneid Arkmos found a grey hair.
  • The party followed another worker, Tarek Lo, below the docks. He showed them a small lift used for VIPs and goods, and told them that Peltin had last been seen there.
  • Sneid Arkmos found a book with a missing middle page — the page appeared to have been deliberately torn out, the damage hidden.
  • The party learned that Jor Pell had worked with Peltin on the day he disappeared, and obtained Peltin’s address.
