Description
Aldric is an older, hardened man — broad-shouldered, with sharp features and greying hair. A slight limp hints at past battles. He lives in hiding behind the facade of an abandoned smith’s home on Cinder Row, his forge cold and his windows curtained, and he greets intruders with traps and a blade before words.
Beneath the hard exterior is a man of deep loyalties: the mention of a single name was enough to crack his composure and bring emotion breaking through.
Role in the Campaign
- A contact in Drar provided to the party by Moelwyn.
- The party sought him to gather information about the Antamian Empire’s incursion into Shalarag.
- His name was unknown to the bartender at The Dust Bowl, and he proved to be living in hiding under a neglected forge-home on Cinder Row.
The Confrontation (Session 64)
- The party tracked Aldric to house 17, Cinder Row, using an address given to Dristuul by Silk.
- The home was rigged: a trap flooded the corridor with smoke and sent a flying sword at Sneid Arkmos. Aldric charged out and attacked relentlessly.
“That’s what everyone says.” — Aldric, when Sneid insisted they didn’t want to kill him
- The fight ended the moment Korin spoke the password: “Moe sent us.”
The Revelation
- Calmer but suspicious, Aldric listened as the party spoke of Shalorag and the Empire hunting one of their own.
- When Kailas revealed more than intended, Aldric froze and spoke a name — Seraphine — realising Kailas’s mother had lived after all.
- He revealed he once served under Emperor Corvin Thorian, not just as a soldier but as a loyal friend, and that he saw a lost legacy in Kailas.
- He told Kailas plainly that he must reclaim his throne — though Kailas showed little desire for it — and offered his help to uncover the truth of Kailas’s bloodline.
- Aldric made his loyalties clear: in his eyes Corvin was nothing compared to the current emperor. He left the Empire because the current emperor had colluded with outside forces, and now wants nothing to do with it.
His Price: Rurik Drenn
- Before helping, Aldric asked a favour: a former soldier and one-time ally named Rurik Drenn had been harassing him — loud, aggressive, and dangerous — even breaking into his house to drive him out of Drar. Rurik lodged at The Vulnerable Swordsman.
- Aldric’s request: scare Rurik off for good, by whatever means necessary, in exchange for which he would share his secrets.
After the Job (Session 66)
- The party returned having killed Rurik in the brawl, and reported the deed; they discussed the Empire’s emperor and Kailas’s notoriety.
- Aldric directed Kailas to Dravenmere — a heavily military, mostly-dwarven settlement tied to Empire royalty, once frequented by Corvin — to learn more about his lineage.
- When Korin mentioned The Cradle, Aldric recognised the name, connecting it to something called The Intake and to the Empire’s old problem with missing children — though he could not recall the details.
- As the party turned to leave, Aldric challenged Kailas to a duel to test his mettle.
The Duel (Session 67)
- Aldric and Kailas fought an honourable duel, which Kailas won; Aldric yielded, conceding he is too old and that Kailas is a great fighter.
- He gave Kailas the Signet of the Silent Guard — a steel signet ring bearing an engraved bird — saying it isn’t magical but will be useful. The name hints at an order or unit Aldric may once have belonged to.
Open Questions
- Whether he is related to Serena Voss, the late Gate Captain of the Citadel in Shalarag — the shared surname has not yet been explained.
