Backstory
Parents
Theros never knew his parents. What little he knows comes from rumors that circulated through the village where he grew up.
Father — A High Elf. A controversial figure: adored by many for his combat proficiency using Druidic Magic, but also feared and hated for it. His affiliation was unknown, but the prevailing rumor was that he was a soldier of some kind, and that he lost his life in combat in a distant land. He eventually became Titania’s champion — a connection Theros only learned of much later.
Tall, thin, pale skin, white hair, green eyes. Wore a characteristic elven leather armor that looked like interwoven leaves joined at the center of the chest. Carried a long wooden staff — thin at the base, ending with wood entwined around a deer skull with enormous antlers, feathers hanging from a thread between them.
Mother — A Tiefling healer. The whole village kept their distance from her. She lived alone at the edge of the village and was a kind of healer, capable of curing most minor injuries and simple illnesses. People only visited her as a last resort. Despite her skill at healing others, she could not survive childbirth and died bringing Theros into the world.
Average height, blue skin, purple eyes with matching hair. Horns that started at the forehead and curved laterally, following the contour of the head, meeting again at the back.
The Orphanage
Theros grew up in an orphanage. He inherited his mother’s blue skin and purple eyes, and his father’s white hair. Due to his unusual race and appearance, most of the other children and caretakers despised him and made him a target of mockery.
Two people were the exception — the closest thing to family he ever knew:
-
Saffean — One of the caretakers. A Half-Elf who had herself grown up despised. Though not an orphan, she was an unwanted child, rejected by her own parents. She was always gentle and protective of Theros. She taught him everything: reading, writing, drawing, dressing, and all the basics needed to survive. Her shared background taught Theros not to look at his origin and race with bitterness, regardless of all the prejudice thrown at him.
-
Neerah — Another child around his age. His partner in adventure and mischief. Since childhood they caused trouble and pulled pranks on everyone — other kids and caretakers alike. Their personalities fit like puzzle pieces.
Neerah and Midnight Escapades
As they grew older, so did the trouble. Around age twelve, Theros and Neerah hatched a plan to escape the orphanage at night to visit the tavern and cause chaos across the village. At first they merely wandered the village after dark, observing people from a safe distance. Gradually they grew bolder, learning the habits of the townsfolk and becoming more daring with their mischief.
The Awakening (Age 14)
During one of their nighttime escapades, Theros and Neerah heard curious music coming from the tavern. Inside, a halfling was playing an instrument nearly his own size while singing with perfect timbre. The two hid and listened to the entire performance, captivated.
When the halfling went to the bar for a drink, they approached the instrument. Neerah picked it up first, running her fingers across the strings without understanding how it worked. But when Theros took it, he felt an immediate connection. His fingers moved almost on their own, each movement creating a new sound.
The melody drew the audience’s attention. The halfling watched from the bar with curiosity. Note by note, the music filled the tavern — and more than that, it filled the atmosphere. Torch lights swayed with the melody, a breeze swept through the room, even the smell shifted to something spring-like. As the melody intensified, the fire changed color, the breeze became strong wind, and a second ghostly image of Theros appeared beside him.
The music built until Theros, finishing the melody, struck one last note more intense than all the others. Every light went out. The wind vanished. Silence filled the air. Theros, suddenly aware of what had happened, panicked. Neerah, perceptive as always, grabbed his hand and pulled him along the wall to the exit.
This was their first encounter with magic. Neerah immediately understood that something had awakened within Theros.
The Lute
The next day, they confided in Saffean. She was surprised at first, but quickly understood. She explained that the instrument was a Lute, and that there were magic users who channeled power through music — Bards.
That afternoon, Saffean disappeared for a few hours and returned with a Lute of her own — less elaborate than the one in the tavern, but functional. She gave it to Theros.
From that day on, Theros poured himself into the instrument — studying, perfecting his technique, and understanding his connection to this magic. This growing obsession created distance between him and Neerah, and the two gradually drifted apart.
Leaving
At sixteen, Neerah decided to leave the orphanage and set off on adventures with no clear goal. A few months later, feeling stagnant and unable to improve further, Theros followed. After a difficult farewell with Saffean, he headed for the nearest city.
He quickly discovered that his talent was enough to sustain him. Any tavern would offer lodging, food, and drink in exchange for daily performances, and tips on top of that let him live carefree. He traveled from city to city, village to village, meeting new people and cultures, following his impulses.
The Mysterious Figure
When Theros perfected his technique and became proficient with magic, he had an unexpected visit in one of his dreams. A figure he could not distinguish appeared regularly, communicating in a language he did not know — yet he understood perfectly. Usually just small, inconsequential words that guided him when he felt lost.
As he grew older and more familiar with this presence, it began appearing not only in dreams but during the day, in random places:
- Once, a hooded figure sat at a table in a tavern where he was performing, gave a feminine laugh, and simply dematerialized — with no reaction from the audience.
- Another time, the same figure leaned against a wall as he walked down the street, whispered something unintelligible, and vanished.
This happened regularly, two or three times a week. This mysterious figure was Titania, Queen of the Fey Wild, who would become his Warlock patron.
The Warlock Change
Something has slowly been changing in Theros — twisting. He is not sure if this is just who he is, or something more. Perhaps this is just what growing feels like. Or perhaps it is the influence of Titania.
What started as a desire to inspire his allies and make his mark in the world — with a good amount of well-natured mischief — became something else. Life grew too serious ever since that first re-encounter with Neerah in the woods. And he needed to change with it.
Neerah had been there when he first picked up the Lute. She had been there when his notes gained magical ability. Even though they had grown estranged after he left, his music always made him feel like she was nearby.
But after that day, his music felt empty. Soulless. More than that, it made him feel lonely — alone while surrounded by people. And so, Theros stopped playing.
That is when the scales started tipping. Where he once strove for a balance between helping his allies and tricking his foes, the latter now took precedent. The Bard faded. The Warlock emerged.
