Background
Saffean was one of the caretakers at the orphanage where Theros and Neerah grew up. A Half-Elf, she had herself grown up despised by much of the population around her. Though not an orphan, she was an unwanted child — rejected in part by her own parents. This gave her a deep empathy for the outcasts in her care.
She was always gentle and protective of Theros, shielding him from the prejudice directed at him because of his unusual race and appearance. She taught him everything — reading, writing, drawing, and all the basics needed to survive. Her shared experience of being different taught Theros not to look at his origin with bitterness.
The Lute
When Theros and Neerah confided in her about Theros’s magical awakening at the tavern, Saffean was surprised at first but quickly understood what had happened. She explained that the instrument was a Lute and that there were magic users who channeled power through music — Bards.
That same afternoon, she disappeared for a few hours and returned with a Lute — less elaborate than the one Theros had played, but functional enough. She gave it to him, setting him on the path that would define his life.
Farewell
When Theros decided to leave the orphanage a few months after Neerah’s departure, he shared a difficult farewell with Saffean — the closest thing to a mother he ever knew.
