Nature
Vathiriss is a tainted Quori spirit bound to Nyxara — a corruption of the bond that normally exists between Kalashtar and spirits of light. Where most Kalashtar carry benevolent dream spirits that guide and protect them, Nyxara is bound to an entity of hunger and malice. Vathiriss is connected to the Dreaming Dark, a sinister force within Dal Quor, the plane of dreams.
Manifestation
Vathiriss does not appear in physical form. Instead, it manifests as nightmares, taking the shapes of Nyxara’s greatest fears. It wages a constant psychological war to fracture her mind — pleading, bargaining, and threatening in an endless cycle. The entity’s influence is relentless, a voice that never truly falls silent.
During Nyxara’s encounter with an enchanted mirror, she saw a shadow creature resembling a quori — a reflection of Vathiriss made partially visible through the mirror’s magic.
Nyxara’s Burden
The bond with Vathiriss has defined much of Nyxara’s life:
- Exile — Nyxara’s own people feared the cursed bond and cast her out
- Faith — Nyxara found The Moonweaver’s grace, using the goddess’s light to keep Vathiriss at bay
- Hope — Moelwyn has offered to help with the Vathiriss problem once he fully recovers, suggesting that the bond may not be permanent
The tainted bond is a direct consequence of Nyxara’s parentage. Her mother was Kalashtar — one of those who fight against Dal Quor’s tyranny. Her father was Inspired — a mortal vessel for an evil Quori. The collision of these two bloodlines produced a bond unlike any other: not a guiding light, but a whispering hunger.
