Background

Eva Rostova was a seasoned and respected officer in the Dwendalian Empire’s military. She was present during the razing of Korin’s village near Nicodranas — a brutal quarantine operation ordered by the Empire to contain an unnatural plague created by Laudna Briarwood.

During a post-raze patrol through the smoldering ruins, Rostova discovered an unconscious boy amid the collapsed wreckage of his family home — Korin, then twelve years old. She took him in.

The horrors she witnessed and participated in during the razing led her to retire from active service. She could not reconcile the cruelty of the Empire’s institutional decision with her own conscience — a contrast between duty and morality that would deeply shape Korin’s worldview.

Mentorship of Korin

Under her stern but fair guidance, Korin underwent rigorous military training. She channeled his grief and rage into discipline and martial skill.

On his eighteenth birthday, she presented him with his parents’ wedding rings — recovered from the fires and kept safe for six years. She also revealed the truth: the plague had been the deliberate work of a necromancer named Laudna Briarwood, a conclusion backed by the Dwendalian Empire’s own investigation.

For the next two years, she supported Korin’s obsessive research into Briarwood while equipping him with survival skills beyond soldiering — tracking, foraging, wilderness navigation, and reading people.

When Korin swore his oath and took the name Duskbane, Rostova guided him toward justice rather than blind revenge, invoking the legacy of his father Marcus Oakhart.

Faith

Rostova followed the Dawnfather, as was common among the Crownsguard and military institutions near Nicodranas. She passed these teachings to Korin, though it ultimately proved not to be his true calling.

Death

Rostova passed away peacefully in her sleep years after Korin set out on his own. The news severed his last tangible connection to a stable past.
